AC System Maintenance
Maintaining your air conditioner
The secret to an air conditioner that works well is maintenance.
Regularly maintaining your air conditioner will improve its energy efficiency and extend its life . You can perform some routine maintenance on your air conditioner yourself, but other things need to be done by a technician.
Please Note: Before you do any maintenance on your home air conditioner, make sure the unit is completely switched off and the wire disconnected.
Regularly clean or replace your filter
The most important step in air conditioner maintenance is keeping the filter clean. The air we breathe contains dust and other microscopic airborne debris. The unit filters air through a fine mesh, and catches dust and other impurities in the filter.
Keep condenser and evaporator coils clean
In most air conditioning units, the coils can be found behind the filter. If the coil has become dirty, airflow is reduced and it becomes unable to absorb heat . Clean the condenser and evaporator coils once a month during hotter months. If you live in a dry or dusty location, you may need to clean them more often.
Keep outdoor equipment clear of debris
Regularly remove any dirt, leaves and weeds from around the outdoor unit. Trim vegetation back at least half a metre from the unit so that enough air can reach the unit.
When to call us
Your air conditioning gear should be serviced regularly by a professional technician, who will check for blockages and cleanliness. They can also do the more extensive maintenance work, such as inspecting, cleaning and tuning up the outdoor condenser and indoor air handling unit, and can help you decide whether it’s time to replace your air conditioner. Check your user manual to see how frequently the air conditioner should be serviced.
